Yeah, with opera and songs it's good to have a libretto, but I forgot that there are copyright issues with texts and translations, so if you don't own a copy of the recording you're out of luck, unless you're comfortable enough with your French that you can mostly do without the translation. Nonetheless I get a lot out of comparing the two (text with translation). Lots of "hello, old friend" with stuff I forgot years ago: grammar, forms, vocabulary.
More obviously it doesn't give you much help with understanding spoken French (as you've stated) but, if you mix it in with other stuff -- and if you could get your hands on a translation -- it could still be useful. Try a French-language news station, I guess?
Obviously opera would be written in a more formal register. But your listening list is probably pretty diverse to where that wouldn't be an issue.
