Mostly because it came up with a BR movie for our times by devising a 2049 future that is bleak like BR's original 2019 world, but unlike that BR 2019 world, there's nothing cool or romantic about the bleak world in 2049 at all, you'd never want to live there to save your life. I bet lots of people would find the bleakness of BR's original world sort of beautiful if they had to live in it.

I did not know what was going on with the Jared Leto character and most of the movie after Gosling meets Ford is a waste: an incoherent brutal fight-to-the-death scene, a pointless "revelation" that I can't even off the top of my head remember what the hell it was, and an ending that was just an ending.

I'd rank it slightly below Dune and Arrival, but be advised I'm not in love with those films either. Villeneuve's best are probably Sicario, Prisoners and maybe the non-English Polytechnique. He has not made a "masterpiece" yet.

We shall see if it ever picks up a cult like BR did--after all, BR and BR2049 both tanked at the box office big time.
