Emotional resonance was no problem for me with Todd; if he comes up with a beautiful song it's beautiful to me even if it is some sort of postmodern cerebral homage thing. I LOVE the 10 minute "Soul Medley" on AWATS, except the last part.
I should mention that while I took some time to love WOIIFTM, I loved Freak Out right away. Except parts of the freak out.
Perfectionism? No wonder Frank teamed up with Beefheart, who was even worse.
