A lot of their popular 90s bands had either left them, broken up or just were in a commercial decline. They signed some hip-hop and electronic acts that never caught on.

Plus, CD sales in general were down. File-sharing was still a big threat. In 2002, I think record labels were still suing people for sharing albums online.

So Matador put out a deluxe reissue of a big record from their most popular band. It was a cash cow release when they might have needed it. I think that's a big part of it.
