Re: Probably influence by my recent Prince discography listen
I mostly agree. With most very popular songs I can see the appeal, but I don't get the draw of "When Doves Cry" at all - I find the melody awkward and ugly. And that's true for a lot of his other stuff too. I do think some of his songs have good grooves (e.g. "1999", though that one goes on way too long) or vibes (e.g. "Sign o' the Times", which I like for its sparseness) that can still make them palatable to me, but most of them don't do much for me.
"Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad" is my favorite song of his, which does have a great hook. "Kiss" is up there too, largely on the strength of the instrumental. I also love "Nothing Compares 2 U" as done by Sinead O'Connor (I think there's a Prince-sung version floating around but I haven't heard it).
I probably like the stuff Wendy & Lisa did after leaving his band more than any Prince album.
