I wouldn't necessarily disagree with the points being made in this thread but to act baffled by the popularity of the riff/song seems pretty bizarre, especially when you emphasize how simple the riff is, which is exactly the point and underlines why the overly academic "more complex = better" approach to musical criticism might be somewhat valuable when assessing classical music but doesn't really work when applied to pop/rock music.
