When everyone got "viciously angry" you should have just responded with "I was just joking bros lulz"- that would have instantly put out that fire. Or maybe you could have tried "UMNUMNUMNUMNUM"

Yeah joking about 9/11 in an attempt to be "edgy" is pretty lame in general. I don't remember exactly what I said and don't think it was really even a joke- which is why I used the phrase "lighthearted comment"- but still felt shitty after hearing about my coworker's trauma.
