Re: Post five songs
Janis Ian is best known for two songs. One is "Society's Child", a hit in 1966 (released when she was just 15) about an interracial relationship, which was predictably controversial. But independent of subject matter it's quite pretty, with a real nice harpsichord bit. Produced by Shadow Morton, who previously spearheaded The Shangri-Las. Leonard Bernstein featured her playing it on a TV special he did on pop music (which also included Brian Wilson playing "Surf's Up"). Her other big hit was "At Seventeen" which hit #1 in 1975, a kind of weepy bossa nova song about being an alienated teenager. Her other legacy is being (I assume) the namesake of a character in the movie Mean Girls. I hadn't heard that Shame cover, it's good - brings out the acidity in her lyrics well.
