So when TPM was released and the initial responses were lukewarm at best and disgusted at their worst I'd have to imagine he was taken aback by people who were expecting the most-hyped entertainment-of-a-lifetime experience and instead found themselves sneering at "what is this kiddie crap," as if they'd all forgotten they were to go see a kids' film rather than something more sophisticated. That's been with me since 1999.
And I can clearly remember the hype, particularly in the last two weeks leading up to May 20 1999, being the most hype I've ever seen for a movie by far, rivalled only by Jurassic Park (Titanic, you may remember, had a lot of people thinking it was going to flop before the reviews were largely positive and it made loads of money right away.) The month leading up to May 20 1999 was dominated by two things in the news, Star Wars and Columbine. It was a friggin' fever pitch.
