Ebert *seemed* to change his opinion later, adding II to the Great Movies list, although I'm well aware, as are you most likely, that he said his criticisms haven't changed.
I also changed my opinion--I rewatched the second film and now realize it is better than the third, although I've never been terribly sure why there are so many people who think it beats the original.
And the thing of it is, I only rewatched the second film--I have never gotten around to rewatching the third, so I only saw it once, in 2004 or 2005 or so. I may rewatch it, but it'd have to be that new cut Coppola came up with, and even then, I'd probably have to compare it to the original III somehow.
And after everything else, I just think the second film is, oh, four stars out of five, not five out of five. I'm....uh, not sure what my reasons were. As a dumbass 22 year old I thought the second film was annoyingly hard to follow, but on rewatch I noticed it probably had the best male supporting cast ever. Yes, even better than Heat!
