Re: Do you believe in guilty pleasures?
Not really, I usually figure if I'm getting something out a piece of media there's something worthwhile there, even if it's not aspiring to high art. Like, idk, Miami Connection is terrible in most ways but it is successful at being entertainment. There are genuinely immoral movies, but i've never watched Mondo stuff or Cannibal Holocaust or whatever, though I guess there's that grim scene of a turtle being butchered in Tampopo. I don't get any pleasure out watching that scene though. I suppose I feel a little guilty about scenes of gleeful mayhem in action movies - e.g. "look at this poor bastard get his entire livelihood destroyed in one second thanks to this car chase!" but it's not something I tend to agonize over. I guess I feel vaguely guilty about how much I like the first couple Dandy Warhols albums - the singer has no range and seems super annoying and the songs are derivative of more talented bands but I find them really enjoyable to listen to. Or maybe the John Phillips album, where there's a certain something added through the knowledge that the singer is a monster and is cheerfully singing about it.
