Frank Zappa/Mothers - We're only in it for the money (I'm always constantly impressed and amazed at the level of vitriol that they have here towards the psychedelic scene/hippies here, especially because it's so spot on and also because I never heard such a bitter and sarcastic view of the world at the time of the late 60s as on here..I'm still wondering if there's anything else comparable to this because I never found anything like this album.. Not only that but it's also catchy as #### and fun to listen to. And funny as hell. Def one of my favorite albums of all time)
Kinks - Give the people what they want (haven't heard much of this album honestly but Better Things is such a great song that I heard somewhere recently.. always was more familiar with the Fountains Of Wayne cover but this is one of my faves of theirs. Is the rest of the album just mediocre? Weird how good this song is if so)
10,000 Maniacs - our time in Eden (I remember loving this when I was like 10 years old like 30 years ago. Don't think I've heard this in full since then. Very good album from one relisten, although mostly the 2 hit singles still stuck with me the most besides a few others here. Def will revisit again soon)
Todd Rundgren - A Wizard a true star (a crazy album though not as crazy as I remember. Just all over the place, but still damn fun and catchy and I love the spirit of it. International Feel is one song I love that for some reason I used to skip)
Flaming Lips - Transmissions from the satellite heart ( had to confirm I still love this one to death and I still do. I guess some of it is silly like Be My Head but there's so much enthusiasm for the material and so much catchiness that I just can never stop loving it for what it is. It's flaws are part of the charm. It is weird how She Don't Use Jelly is so much worse and stupider than the rest though, but still a nostalgic treat either way with that interesting slide guitar which is like some kind of psychedelic country sound filtered into 90s alt rock)
Songs:
"Do Your Thing" - Charles Wright & the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band (killer ####ing groove on this song although no one talks about it except probably that it's been sampled a million times in hip hop songs I'm sure these days)
"Indian Love Call" - Slim Whitman (and people only talk about this as being some funny song that was on Mars Attacks too but it's seriously gorgeous and one of my favorite country tunes and artists in general)
"Break My stride" - Matthew Wilder (always thought this was just some cheesy 80s hit but it clicked with me recently and became one of my faves. Never noticed that quasi- reggae kind of beat going on and it is just irresistible melodically. Have no idea if he has anything else good but he might be one of those one hit wonders who only struck lightening once)
Can't believe that new Animal Collective went by me completely so I need to hear that, although I feel like I won't even enjoy it as much as Painting With and I'm losing interest in their newer stuff.
Still have to hear more Janis Ian as well but I always forget about stuff I read about but need to hear later.
