I am absolutely certain that I will listen to Duke Ellington after I finish with Mingus
I note that the next album on my Mingus playlist is Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, Max Roach - Money Jungle.
In terms of what I like
My main issues with jazz is sometimes it can seem like soloist noodling over static harmonies. The soloing doesn't seem to elicit any sort of emotion to me.
Charles Mingus does have the spirit of romanticism. Music to express emotional expression and tell a story similar to tone poems (I noted that tone poem is listed as a subgenre for Black Saint) in romantic classical music. There is a sense of dramatic arc in his compositions and there is a sense that the soloing actually is trying to represent some sort of emotional state. Harmonically there seems to some chord progression and modulations at time. I also think he does seem to be the greatest master of dissonance. A lot of time dissonance provoke modernist garbage reaction from myself. However Charles Mingus tend to overly the dissonance over traditional harmonies which makes it comprehensible and there is a sense of twisted darkness over the normal world in his work.
