The movie is cynical too but nowhere near as bleak as Vonnegut.
The 1996 Mother Night adaptation starring Nick Nolte and directed by the dorky guy from Christine and Back To School was okay, I guess, but it's pretty obscure nowadays.
Just thank God you never read Vonnegut's REAL flops, crud like Hocus Pocus and Deadeye Dick and Slapstick (which Vonnegut himself gave a "D-" to in a 1981 nonfiction essay) and Jailbird, the book where Vonnegut states that we'd be living in a socialist brotherhood-of-man utopia had Sacco and Vanzetti not been executed. Uhhh, sure? Was Roger Waters taking notes when he proposed that Live Aid would save the world?
