I think he's controversial more because of some of the guests he has on than his own politics. He seems to have an open-minded attitude and is willing to listen to his guests, which isn't itself a bad thing, but when it involves giving a platform and lending some implied credibility to an anti-vaxxer or a quasi-white supremacist, leftish people will often look at it negatively. (Of course, this gets into the general debate about free speech as a legal right and as an ethos that defines much of the discourse about politics and culture these days.)
