Largely, I think for most of the artists I like, it doesn't make too much of a difference - making a few hundred dollars off Spotify a year isn't really an incentive for continuing to be a musician. Combined with COVID-related tour cancellations and backlogs on vinyl production, the overall situation is probably worse than 10-15 years ago. I don't know if there's a solution, but it does seem like there should be *some* viable options b/w "paying $10 a month for all the music you want" versus "paying $10 for a digital copy of individual album".
On the other hand, some artists seem to be making paydays from being randomly included in Spotify lists:
