I def would prefer white boy reggae to whiteboy ska, agreed. Really disliked that ska revival sound of the 90s. It really does sound so fake and whitewashed.
I preferred that Weird Al parody to the original at one time for some reason but yeah the lyrics are so dumb.
I actually liked Hootie when I was 13 I hate to admit...not even sure why because they sound so achingly generic and boring to me now. Me and my best friend Ron were fans and spun Cracked Rear View all the time and bought that disappointing 2nd album. Their popularity is definitely very inexplicable looking back now, even to someone who actually liked them.
As for You still Believe In Me - the only thing I can remember is the melody is featured in the song Autobahn by Kraftwerk. Probably my favorite part of the song with the flute.
