A lot of the songs in D&D are this comfy MTV/saturday-morning post-R. E. M. alt-rock style that the world had passed on from in about five years. It's hard to explain, but it's a slacker-pop substyle of alternative that dates immediately to 1994.
Todd Rundgren did the score for it, BTW. "Can We Still Be Friends" appears near the end of the film.
