I saw "The Gambler" the other week, since both James Caan and Paul Sorvino died recently. It's an underrated gem. Caan plays the title character, an intelligent college instructor from a wealthy family who can't keep himself from sliding into loserdom because of his addiction. Sorvino has a side role as a mob enforcer with a soft spot for Caan and lets him slide as much as reasonably possible on his debts. Probably not as popular as it should've been because most audiences don't want to sit watching a self-destructive character with no arch of redemption.
