If I can't finish Zelda II without save states then I'm probably not going to finish it; with an exception for using save states as a substitute for just leaving the game running for days, so that if I need to go through a session of tediously farming then I can at least do it for a few minutes at a time over several days.
I'm not above using a walkthrough on this game. The SNES and Game Boy games are full of puzzles, but I don't remember anything as random as the most esoteric stuff in the NES games. I generally try and use guides as little as possible, but looking back on it I don't remember people talking about how guides were cheating until the internet made it easy to find everything right away without having to pay for anything. Maybe it's just that I was younger and kids are less likely to have qualms about "not beating it the right way," but I feel like they were just part of the gaming culture back then.
