I have been planning an ALTTP replay (first in about 20 years) for some time now, just to see if I've forgotten anything (or if I can solve that Ice Lake Palace drop-the-block puzzle without using the Cane of Somaria!) but this thread is admittedly making me feel like running through one or both of the NES Zeldas. And if I tried to play ZII without help, I'm guessing I'd make it to maybe the third dungeon before I begin drinking heavily, and I don't drink.
I'm guessing that there aren't many things in ALTTP that throw people off--if there are, they're 1)the aforementioned Ice Lake puzzle, 2)the hidden floors in the lower levels of Ganon's Tower, and 3)people who don't know how to make Blind show up in Blind's Dungeon (Dark World level 4). Probably nothing in comparison to getting lost in Great Palace in ZII or any Second Quest stuff in the original game.
The only thing in Ocarina Of Time that people get thrown off by is the Water Temple. Wonderful game, but definitely easier than its predecessors.
I don't remember any complaints about guides or magazines as a kid. Those Players' Guides had to have been best sellers, I was still seeing old SNES/NES ones available in game stores in 2000.
