I remember someone pointing out that they kept a reference form the original book about Buddha being someone who fought the darkness, but cut out references to Jesus. The notion that Buddhism can be safely appropriated by coffee shop liberalism without ruffling the feathers of anyone that matters, but Christianity needed to be scrubbed out to make the movie "more universal" is more dismissive of Buddhists than it is of Christians.
I thought the visuals I saw in the trailer looked tacky, so I was probably never going to watch it no matter what.
They've announced just a few days ago that it's being made into a stage musical. There are apparently a number of different stage versions floating around already.
