A One and a Two (Yi yi) -- this is long but well done. you'll need patience but it pays off. seems to be one of the most revered films of the past 30 or so years from Asia. I haven't seen any other Yang but he is well loved.
Amarcord -- you may as well watch one of the most famous Fellinis. I actually wasn't so big on this one, though I need to watch it again. felt a little too focused on his usual exaggerated childhood vignettes and a bit shapeless otherwise, though amusing (of course, one of the all-time titty-sucking scenes, har har!)
Come and See -- hard to get through, but extremely effective
A Woman Under the Influence -- I've only seen two Cassavetes (the other one was Faces, also quite good), so nowhere near an expert, but this was stunning, I thought. really effective and incredibly acted
Salo -- I watched this a couple years back and will watch again soon, actually. I think it's a very well done bit of work that of course has quite the reputation. it's not *so* gross in this day and age (though the $hit-eating was tough on my gag reflex). probably most any other movie on this list appeals to you more... but you wouldn't be wasting your time and tummy watching it, IMO.
that's it from me! there's loads of stuff on this list I need to watch. curious to see what the new Sight & Sound list will bring to the fore... I wonder if there's some new people making the selections who may shake up the list a little bit. I would guess Vertigo will keep top spot.
