partly because it was overhyped- many consider it to be the single best Brazilian album ever and that's a lot to live up to. And like you say, it definitely suffers from double album syndrome. But some of the songwriting and sonic textures are pretty remarkable right off the bat and it gradually creeps up on you. I still don't think it's one Brazil's greatest albums but totally understand why many feel that way.

Milton has quite a few good albums (seems like you've heard a few at this point) whereas Borges was less consistent but FWIW I prefer the latter's self titled album from '72 (same year as "Esquina") to anything by the former. Very consistent and surprisingly hard rocking at times. It's also short n' sweet especially compared to "Esquina":
