'A mad musical humorist with the chops, material and ultratight band (of misfits known as The City Slickers) to prevent being written off as mere novelty, Jones was an entertainer of the highest order. Using dixieland and swing as the template, he hilariously lambasted everything from Nazis, celebrities, holidays, fashion trends, "serious" music and even himself on both record and TV. Without Jones, technically skilled madmen who followed in his wake like Frank Zappa may have had a much rougher road to travel.'
