There's no reason to listen to that stuff if you have no particular inclination to. Some of it was very popular, but the only thing that had any wider importance was his cover of I Shot the Sherriff, which brought Bob Marley alot of mainstream exposure. Of course the original is better, but Clapton at least gets credit for jumping on the reggae wagon early and helping to make it more popular.
I think the only album of original studio tracks from his post-alcoholic period (the last 40 years or so) that's really well remembered is Journeyman, but I've always thought that one had aged horribly.
