Lots of people care about Clapton 70s career but not his 60s career (but they're WRONG). I don't have a good read on whether many people who grew up in the late 70s & 80s think Stevie Wonder really only got going with Songs in the Key of Life, and that the string of albums after that are better than what he did earlier on.
Personally, *I* think Clapton only deserves to be considered a legend for what he did up through age 26, with some decent-but-not-great material after that, but he was releasing some albums that alot of people think were career milestones into the mid 90s. Journeyman produced alot of radio staples, and Unplugged was one of the biggest things he ever did. His period of great influence and importance + period of additional popularity isn't beaten by very many people.
