We're about the same age, and maybe it was because my parents didn't listen to radio stations that played new music, but I remember being surprised by people (probably mostly girls?) who knew him from Tears in Heaven, which was a song that I'd never heard. The classic rock stations I listened to in high school never played that, or the acoustic version of Layla that was apparently better known to some people than the original. I've never really cared for Tears in Heaven, or the Unplugged album in general. I looked up what Billy Ray Cyrus did in 1992, of course I remember Achy Breaky Heart but I guess I thought that it was older than that. It's weird to think that it was a hit in my lifetime, it just seems like the sort of despised cultural artifact that everyone is aware of but no one will admit to ever having liked.
