I usually install it for a few weeks, get what I can out of it, delete, and then repeat at some point later. As long as you delete your account info off Facebook you can just do that over and over again.
The dating apps are annoying, but I think it's a bit silly to call it a "scam" - they have a product and you don't get much out of it if you aren't paying.
