It definitely went both ways on walkmans (in the sense of "portable tape player"). "Rewind" and "fast-forward" were also variously known as "review" and "cue", respectively.

Weirdest walkman I ever had was this big giant thing that had separate output jacks for each stereo channel. Maybe that was the way to do it back in the day and besides, I was a dumb kid and would gladly listen to one channel of a stereo tape. Well what made this walkman cool was that, with the headphone adapter they give you on the plane, I could listen to it in proper stereo. I loved that walkman. I think it had an FM band built in.
