Anyway, I've never been much of a Crosby fan. The Byrds are probably the artists with the best reputation and from an era + genre I typically favor that I have the lowest opinion of. I of course acknowledge their importance, mainly due to being one of the forefathers of psychedelia but I generally never cared for their sound or their material (and yes, I've heard most of the classic albums).
CSN/Y is a bit better but often pretty cheesy and the material could still be pretty weak (especially Nash's though Neil's stuff with them is surprisingly mediocre, especially considering how good most of his solo work was at the time) and TBH I've never thought their harmonies were anything special.
But they have a few good songs and though Stills generally wrote the best stuff, most of the highlights on the debut are surprisingly Crosby's ("Wooden Ships" is probably my favorite even though The Airplane did it better). And yeah the "Deja Vu" title track is definitely a highlight on that album.
And yeah, Crosby's solo debut isn't amazing but it's still way better than it should be given that it's basically just Dave and his famous hippie friends getting stoned and ####ing around. So while I mostly think he's overrated, his death kinda makes me wanna revisit CSN/Y- been quite awhile since I've listened to them.
