Or you don't want to see the text. With some stuff, horror and mysteries in particular, my eyes will always be looking a paragraph ahead. That's actually a good idea on how to handle it. I usually use a note card to cover the lower part of the page or I'll just white-knuckle it, and usually fail.
Have you read The Woman in Black? I just started it last night.
