My parents weren't politically conservative. They were stricter than the parents of alot of other kids I knew about what media we were exposed to, but that was mostly only up through grade school. By the time I was in highschool they usually didn't care about that stuff, and if they did they still tolerated it.
Re letting me play with a Joe Camel cutout, I guess that probably is more surprising because my mom really hated smoking. Her dad smoked and died of heart disease when she was in her early 20s, although he was alot older than you'd think at that point, being 20 years older than my grandma. If I'd said I liked the pop up because I thought cigarettes were cool then I'm sure she would have been upset and not have let me play with it, but I just liked it because it has pyramids on it.
