I guess the idea is that it's better for be no trend than for there to be a lame weak failure of a trend? Nu-metal, punky power pop like Weezer and garage-rock all seem to have about maybe a sixth of the stature of the alternative rock story of the early 90s.

I've rarely given a crap who wins a Grammy, either. Didn't Alanis Morrissette win a bunch of them back in the day? Norah Jones? The Grammies seem to have a far worse track record than the Oscars in terms of simply rewarding "they were a big overexposed deal that year." Of course, this also means that CODA wins Best Picture but whatever.

Call me when Third Eye Blind gets into the R&R HOF, then we'll officially know to use the technology from Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind to erase its existence from my memory completely.
