Scrolling through the list of inductees, I *think* the only artist to get their start post-1970 for whom I couldn't name and hum a single song is Stevie Ray Vaughan. And I can't remember any Iron Maiden songs, so I'm inclined to agree with your argument. Then again, they are a fairly well-known name and cultural reference point, which counts in their favor.

They put Judas Priest in the weird "Award for Musical Excellence" category, which used to just be for sidemen. Maybe that'll evolve into the category for people who were somewhat influential but not famous enough.
