I can understand taking the aliens out, since they certainly would be harder to be convincing on film than the rest of it. But without them it's definitely hard to get the philosophical vibe of the book. That does seem like a dumb and vaguely sexist change for the Heather character. How does either movie handle the "graying" out of different races? That certainly seems like challenging territory.
