What did every one think of the Oscar winners?

"Everyone" practically swept the Academy Awards. Every major Oscar except for Best Actor. I never saw it. But it has sure been the talk of the town.
I was surprised to see a genre picture win so many Academy Awards. This is a science fiction movie? I thought the Acadamy only liked boring drama flicks. "The English Patient" beat out "Fargo" for Chrissake.
BTW, I was very satisfied to see Brandan Fraser win an Oscar for "The Whale." Never saw it (and it got bad reviews) but I still want to see it.
