Most reviews sneered at the Stephen Fry bit too. Personally I couldn't tell what he was saying without a lyrics sheet to save my life but some of it was apparently in Klingon?!? "Among Angels" seemed to be the weakest of the piano tracks IMO. Be advised I don't think 50WFS is a masterpiece, just a decent album, but one I was very prepared to hate. Now to get through Director's Cut and I can finally move on to a new artist!!
Amusingly enough, I'm now on the second DS album and it's not any worse than the first despite being a total clone of it.
Nobody but George Starostin really seems to adore the first DS album. Loads and loads of people still seem to love Double Nickels On The Dime though, there's plenty of glowing reviews out there and it seems to be held it as much esteem as Zen Arcade or Daydream Nation, and while it's nowhere near as good as those it's definitely less dated to the mid 1980s than either. I noticed you commented on the death of Spot and thought about how badly produced New Day Rising is and then how wonderfully crystal clear Double Nickels is, from the same time and same label. I don't know who produced DNOTD but they're good!
