The irony of course being that both sides are correct- prog at its worst is pretentious and dorky and grunge at its worst is stupid and depressing. But as most folks dig deeper into genres they have an unfairly negative overall impression of- which, as you say, is typically due to the influence of others- they often surprised to find that they’re bigger fans of said genres than they thought.

Reggae was like that for me- liked Bob Marley right off the bat but was fairly lukewarm on the genre in general until I discovered and eventually became obsessed with Lee Perry.
