Maybe they like a few hits like “Lola” or “You Really Got Me” but can’t handle an album’s worth of material. Had a similar experience to yours when I played the “Village Green” album for friends- none of them really seemed into it and one of them called it cheesy. Guess I can sorta understand that but was still surprised to hear her say it, partly because she was a huge Beatles fan.

Aside from the cheesiness of some of their stuff, I think the main obstacle folks have with The Kinks is the lack of a good singer or musician in the whole bunch, at least from a technical perspective. So unless they’re the type who’s able to appreciate and focus on the songwriting strengths of Ray & Dave (which isn’t as common as you might think), chances are they’re gonna be mostly underwhelmed.
