Yeah, "the 'loose' aspect" does play a huge role in it, plus half the album is in English so, being exotic music, there's insta-crossover pop appeal. The song I posted goes "walked down Portobello Road to the sound of reggae / I'm alive" -- that's basically it; it's basically a Bob Marley record. (That is, the cultural appeal of a Bob Marley record as a crossover phenomenon, not literally. It doesn't actually sound anything like reggae.)
