FTR I think "Axis" is just marginally less awesome than the other 2
and I like Jimi's ballads too and there's some great ones on there- "Little Wing" is the obvious one (completely deserves its rep) but have also never thought "One Rainy Wish". "Castles In The Sand" and the title track are good too. But the majority of the album consists of relatively short pop songs, which are of course great but I prefer when Jimi is bluesier and stretches out more. Seems like Jimi is sorta aping the Brits on "Axis" and that Noel and Mitch maybe had more of a presence on the "Axis" material (and TIL that Graham Nash and Roy Wood sing backup on the album!). Not that that's necessarily a bad thing- "Little Miss Strange" is probably the most underrated track on "Ladyland". Sure, it's written and sung by Noel but Jimi gets so many tasty goddamn licks in and all in under 3 minutes.
