Sheltering Sky is really well written but sort of one of those middle-finger nihilistic books that you can kind of predict the outcome from at the beginning. Of course, it's been a while since I read it.
The 1990 movie adaptation with John Malkovich etc. is pretty good too, though no one talks about it anymore.
