I don't think that's true - I think there's been a shift, though not totally, from "Cage is so wacky" to "Cage is a unique and interesting actor" in the general perception of him. The meta movie sounded annoying to me and more based on the former perception. But there are a fair amount of interviews with him that discuss his interest in silent-era acting and older styles of performance that can certainly make people laugh, but also provide something striking and memorable. Also, now that he's apparently out of debt, he's taking fewer roles in garbage films that rely on a ridiculous performance to get any kind of audience interest.
