I haven't played Top Gun since I was probably in fifth grade but IIRC part of the difficulty in landing the plane was that it used inverted controls. I learned to fly video-game air- and spacecraft with a joystick with Descent, which uses inverted by default, so I'm well comfortable with it.
I might be remembering this totally wrong.
