Coincidentally, I also recently got extra high and revisited "Up In Smoke" and had a similar reaction- not very funny or coherent, barely a plot. Also made me realize that because I always watched it high, my memory of the beginning was much clearer than the rest. Fortunately, the beginning is the best, specifically where they first meet (the whole sequence leading up to their arrest + court scene). Aside from that, the Ajax snorting scene and "Earache My Eye" are pretty good I guess.
Never knew XTC covered "Watchtower" but um "Satisfaction" is one of Devo's best songs IMO (not much of a fan of theirs though).
I slightly prefer the first 2 Mutantes albums but the 3rd is notably more mature/less wacky and it features "Ave Lucifer", my favorite song of theirs (one of my all time favorites, actually). The 4th album is worth a listen but is a tad cheesy and definitely a notch down. After that it gets a bit spotty but as a mentioned recently, Rita Lee's 2nd album features the whole band and is nearly as good as those first 3 Mutantes albums.
Yeah "Blues & Roots" just seems like a dry run for "Ah Um" which is why I never listen to it even though it's a good album in its own right. Always thought "Dynasty" was underrated though, mostly because it seems like a self-conscious sequel to "Ah Um" in some ways. But the slower tracks are among his best and I love the version of "Mood Indigo" and it makes me wish/wonder why he didn't cover Duke more often.
