I never saw Ringu, but I doubt rewatching The Ring nowadays would make me like it. It's also the beginning of "R-13" horror where there's lots of death and spooky stuff but no gore. (Though I remember a horse getting sucked under a boat with lots of blood.)
The social commentary in the 1978 Dawn Of The Dead is probably a little better (which is saying something, I always thought Romero's "social commentary" in the Dead movies was something badly overstated by horror reviewers), but the 2004 film is a better action movie IMO. What part of the climax did you hate? The blonde girl getting her stuff ruined?
Oh well. You don't hear much about it anymore and it's only a few years away from being as old as the 1978 film was when the 2004 film came out, and Snyder will probably never make anything else like it. (Is he still doing The Fountainhead?)
