Looking at 7, it has some weaker episodes that I forgot were from that season. I still think it's good enough to be one of the classic seasons, but below 2-6. 8 actually looks like it has more good episodes than I remember. I know that at the time I thought that some of the episodes from 7 and 8 were weaker, but I can't remember if I thought the show in general was having bigger issues, which I was aware of by 9.
I do remember thinking that the use of guest stars was getting more ostentatious and gimmicky, although the Mel Gibson episode ended up improving with age.
