Judd Apatow said that invisioned it going on forever as the characters continued to age, and I think that's a more that-Rolling Stone-list-worthy descision than cancelling it after one season.
That weird idea aside, they could have had a second great season (if it spanned the school year like the first one did Linday would be expected to graduate at that point), but getting it to the 4 years that would have been the minimum successful, syndicateable run would probably have been pushing it.
