Re: Camp Best Practices
Attending the right camps I think is important and it might take a camp or two and a healthy dose of parental honesty to figure out what that is. With my first child it was obvious that she was going to have the athletic ability to play at the highest levels but the softball skill required was another story so we went to a couple of power 5 prospect camps as a 7th grader. We picked schools we liked and wanted to visit in places we thought she might like if softball turned out not to be her thing and at camp we discovered that other than being the size of a 7th grader her skill set was appropriate.. She’s now a senior and committed to the sec. With my younger daughter who’s a 6th grader now the jury is still out. She missed out on a lot of training and playing for those couple of years during COVID and she’s taking longer to develop. My non rose colored glasses just don’t see the same level of overall athleticism so for her I think we will start at some smaller school camps and maybe not until 8th or even 9th grade as she’s physically immature too. The moral of my long post is that I think it’s as important to carefully choose the camps you attended as it is to do the right things once you get there. I firmly believe that camps can be very important, especially for girls who’s teams might play a lesser schedule but spend wisely.
